If your child plays football, sooner or later you’ll hear about scouts, trials and academies. This page explains the basics for the 2026/27 season. Our Think like a scout guides go into the detail for each age group.
The Short Answer
Academies find most young players through scouts watching grassroots and school football. Children can’t register with an academy until Under-9; before that, clubs run pre-academy programmes and development centres. What scouts look for changes a lot with age, and the obvious things (size, pace and goals) are often the wrong things.
How Academies Find Young Players
Club scouts watch grassroots matches, school football and their own development centres. A club scout carries club ID with their photo and speaks to parents, not to the child. Scouts see large numbers of players and judge each one against what their club needs, so a single game rarely decides anything, good or bad.
What a scout notices at Under-8 is very different from what they notice at Under-15. Our guides explain what scouts watch at each age.
What Age Can a Child Join an Academy?
| Age | What happens |
|---|---|
| Under-6 to Under-8 | Pre-academy programmes and development centres. Children aren’t registered and stay free to play for their own club. |
| Under-9 to Under-16 | Trials and registration. Registrations last one season, or two at Under-13 and Under-15, and clubs decide each spring who stays. |
| Under-17 and up | Scholarships and the professional development phase, with professional contracts possible from 17. |
Each stage has its own rules, decisions and pressures. That’s why each of our guides covers one age group.
Trials in Brief
- There are no formal academy trials before Under-9.
- A trial lasts up to 8 weeks in a row. For Under-9 to Under-16 it can be extended by 4 weeks, but only with the parent’s consent.
- The club must give your child’s grassroots club and school at least 7 days’ written notice.
- A player can’t trial at two academies at the same time.
What actually happens on a trial, what to bring for each kind of invitation, and the red flags to watch for are in our Trials and Open Days guide, part of the bundle.
What Scouts Look For
Most scouts group what they see into five areas: movement and speed, bravery and duels, reading the game, attitude and character, and quality and end product. How each one shows up changes a lot between Under-7 and Under-17, and a parent watching from the touchline often notices different things from a scout.
Each guide breaks the five areas down for that age, with what a scout looks for and what it doesn’t mean, plus a made-up example scout report from Under-9 up.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do academies charge for trials?
No. Professional academies don’t charge to assess players. Paid “trials”, “scouting days” or “showcases” are camps, whatever they’re called, and buying a place doesn’t put your child in front of an academy.
Can my child still play for their grassroots team?
At a development centre or pre-academy, yes: those players aren’t registered and stay free to play for their own club. Once registered, Under-9 to Under-11 players can play grassroots football only with the academy’s approval each season, and from Under-12 they can’t. School football is still allowed.
What happens if my child is released?
It’s common at every age, and it’s rarely the end of the road. Clubs give their decisions by the third Saturday in May at the latest, and a released player is free to trial elsewhere straight away. Our age-group guides explain what to do next.
Does my child’s birthday matter?
It can. Children born early in the school year are often more physically developed than their teammates, which can hide or flatter ability. Good scouts allow for it, and parents should too.
Will your guides get my child into an academy?
No, and nothing can promise that. Scout52 isn’t connected to any club. The guides help you understand what you’re watching, ask better questions and keep the pressure off your child.
